Visionary Point

12 Points Revitalization Initiative, Inc purchased this lot in 2024--the first property it had ever purchased. At that time, this was an empty lot but previously held a building that served as home to several businesses through the years. There was a tavern, a grocery store, a tv sales and service business, a nutrition center and a variety store.

The brick building on the left is at 1231 Lafayette, now Visionary Point.

A previous group that worked to build up the 12 Points area in the 1980s had planned to create a tribute to Walter Phillips who helped develop the business district.  The current revitalization group had the same idea when this lot was acquired.  The space was to become a memorial green space to honor the work of Walter Phillips. It was in the late 1800s that he surveyed the area. Phillips purchased much of the real estate himself and began to build along Lafayette.

The three swings were purchased and installed by the revitalization group.

A local artist/sculptor Joe McCarthy created this carved wooden sculpture depicting Walter Phillips with his surveying tools.  The sculpture was donated to stand in this space to honor the memory of Walter Phillips.

This space continues to develop as new plants and flowers are added to enhance the beauty of the area.  The name Visionary Point was chosen as Phillps was able to envision a thriving business district and worked to create his vision.

Visitors are encouraged to stop by, enjoy the swings and look out to the 12 Point business district. It has certainly changed throughout the years with periods of growth and periods of decline. Still, it is good to remember who helped develop the area. Here’s to Walter Phillips, Father of 12 Points!
